We are definitely a dog household!! For a while now, I have been trying to come up with a stylish way to stash dog treats throughout my house. It is not always convenient to run back to the kitchen every time one of my super cute doggies does something fabulous. I need to be prepared! These super fun dog treat mason jars allow me to spread the treat love around the house!
This DIY is super easy! Here are the steps for awesomeness:
Step 1
Gather your supplies! You will need:
- Jars – Pick a size based on your needs. I used 4oz Smooth Jars by Ball (similar).
- Jar Lids – Since I am using these to store dog treats and I need quick, easy access, I chose these Plastic Storage Caps by Ball.
- Gold Spray Paint – I used this post from A Beautiful Mess to decide on the perfect spray paint. I chose the Valspar Metallic Gold spray paint which is a warmer gold tone that isn’t super shiny.
- Toy Dogs! – You would think that since I have a son, I would have plenty of spray paintable toys. Oddly enough, I do not. So, I picked up these little guys!
- Glue – I started out with Krazy Glue and then switched to Loctite Plastic Bonder Epoxy, which is definitely a better choice for this kind of job.
Step 2
Pick out which dogs you want to use and GLUE!
SIDE NOTE OF REALITY: I screwed up very early in this DIY. I thought that super glue, crazy glue, whatever-you-want-to-call-it glue was supposed to glue anything to anything. Apparently, that is NOT the case. Please pick a glue that is specific to the materials you are using. In this case, I was trying to glue plastic to plastic. After using Krazy Glue for the job, I quickly realized that my sons sticky fingers could probably make these little dogs stick better than Krazy Glue. So, I took the time to research which glue is the appropriate tool for the job. Epoxy sounded like overkill to me, but it seriously did the job! Be careful and don’t use too much. Excess epoxy will just make it look like your dogs are standing in mud blobs…not so stylish!
SIDE NOTE OF REALITY #2: <<–What?!? Yes! Apparently, I was on a roll. My next misstep occurred while still trying to make sure these little suckers stuck to the lids. I had read several tips that suggested that “roughing” up the plastic with sandpaper was the perfect ritual to ensure that the glue gods provided the maximum amount of adhesion. I cannot attest to whether or not this step saved my project from certain doom. BUT I can tell you that “roughing” up the lids with sandpaper left little scratches everywhere that were perfectly accentuated with a golden sheen of spray paint. It was not quite the smooth, gilded surface that I had imagined. I will definitely skip that step next time!
Step 3
Spray paint!! I created little box pedestals for my doggie lids. I took them outside and subjected them to three light coats of spray paint. Since the dogs were so small, I was scared that too much paint would just create drippy blobs. Make sure you start out spraying at least 10 inches from the lids and use even back-and-forth passes. Wait at least 15 minutes between each coat. The result – perfect little gold doggies! Allow them to dry for at least 24 hours before handling (even longer is even better). Touching them too soon can dull the golden sheen.
Step 4
Fill your treat jars with your dog’s favorite treats (my dogs’ favorite are Cloud Star Itty Bitty Buddy Biscuits)! Put the lids on!! Place them in strategic places throughout your house!!!
You can use the lids on jars of different sizes. You can glue on different animals. You can paint them different colors. You can use them for dog treats, cat treats, people treats, cooking supplies, craft supplies…the possibilities are pretty much endless.
Whatever you decide to do, these jars are guaranteed to make you smile. I mean, I have a golden weiner dog staring at me right now…
Although my favorite has to be the sheep dog because it looks like my for real dogs.
My dogs, Chase and Ozzie, are actually Havanese. BUT I can definitely see the resemblance between the gold and furry versions!
Do you have dogs in your family? What is their favorite doggie treat? Wouldn’t it look fabulous in a cute little mason jar with a golden dog on top?
I would LOVE to see what you create. Don’t forget to share your fabulous golden doggie jars (or any other craft project) on Instagram and Twitter – #CrazyHappyCraft

Thanks Krysten!!! I’ve also thought about making jars like this for my son’s room and for my craft supplies. I’m thinking either dinosaurs or safari animals would do the trick. There is something about a golden elephant or T-rex that makes me smile 🙂
